What it is
Rome's botanical garden occupies the slope of the Janiculum Hill behind the Palazzo Corsini in Trastevere — a 12-hectare spread of greenhouses, rose gardens, Japanese garden and ancient-tree collection that most visitors to the neighborhood entirely miss.
Highlights
The rose garden in May is the obvious seasonal draw; the cactus greenhouse and the collection of Mediterranean species are worthwhile at any time. The garden contains one of the oldest plane trees in Rome, estimated to be around 350 years old.
Practical notes
Small entry fee, minimal crowds even on summer weekends, and significantly cooler than the streets outside thanks to the tree cover and slope aspect — one of the more pleasant places in Rome to spend a hot afternoon.
