The Colosseum

Rome's largest amphitheatre, and still its most-booked sight. Here's how to get in without wasting a morning of your trip.

Ticket types

The standard ticket covers the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, valid for 24 hours across all three. An arena floor upgrade puts you where the gladiators stood; a full experience ticket adds the underground chambers and top tier, and needs booking well ahead — those slots are limited and go first.

Best time to go

First entry and the last two hours before close are the quietest windows. Midday in June through August means both heat and the thickest crowds — avoid it if your dates are flexible.

Getting there

Metro line B stops directly at Colosseo. It's also a flat, ten-minute walk from Monti, making an early visit easy to pair with breakfast in the neighborhood.
