The best free panoramic view in Rome — and a noon cannon fired every day since 1847.
The view
The Gianicolo isn't one of Rome's famous seven hills, but it's higher than all of them, giving a sweeping west-facing panorama across the entire city. Free to access, and reliably less crowded than the Vittoriano rooftop.
The cannon
A cannon has been fired here every day at noon since 1847, originally to synchronize the city's church bells. The tradition continues — a small crowd usually gathers around five minutes before to watch.
Getting there
A steep but scenic walk uphill from Trastevere, or reachable by bus. The equestrian statue of Garibaldi at the top is the traditional focal point of the terrace.
