A first set of named picks, organised by neighborhood. More are added every week.

Rather than a single citywide "best of" ranking, this list is deliberately organised by area because where you eat in Rome matters as much as what you order — a trattoria that's genuinely excellent in Testaccio and one that's genuinely excellent near the Pantheon operate under very different pricing and crowd pressures, and comparing them directly isn't especially useful. Use the neighbourhood groupings below to find something reliable close to wherever your day already has you.

Testaccio

Family-run trattorias near the old Mattatoio — Rome's most respected spots for the four classic pastas (cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, gricia), often no reservations, expect a short wait at peak dinner hours.
Counter-service spots inside Mercato Testaccio — cheap, fast, and where a lot of locals actually eat lunch.

Trastevere

Trattorias off Piazza San Cosimato — a block or two back from the main squares, better value and quality than the spots directly on the tourist-heavy piazzas.

Monti

Wine bars with a short kitchen menu along Via del Boschetto — good for a lighter meal paired with a well-chosen glass, book ahead on weekends.

Centro Storico

Trattorias two or three streets back from Piazza Navona — noticeably better value and quality than anything directly on the main piazzas.
