Where to watch the sun set over the city — the terraces, hills and rooftops with the best panoramas.
Gianicolo Hill
The best free panorama in Rome — higher than all seven of the famous hills, with a wide westward view over the city. The noon cannon fires daily from here. Reach it on foot from Trastevere or by bus. The terrace in front of the Garibaldi statue is the main viewpoint.
Aventine Hill & Giardino degli Aranci
Smaller and more contained than the Gianicolo, with a direct view south toward the Tiber and east toward the Palatine. The Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) is one of the most peaceful green spaces in the centre. Combine with the Keyhole view two minutes away.
Pincian Hill terrace
Above Piazza del Popolo — a bird's-eye view down onto the oval piazza and its twin churches. Reached through the Villa Borghese gardens. Free, rarely crowded, and excellent at any time of day.
Vittoriano lower terrace
Free, no queue at opening time, and a direct view over the Roman Forum. The best elevated view of ancient Rome that doesn't cost anything.
Castel Sant'Angelo rooftop
Requires the museum entry ticket, but gives a unique view along the Tiber toward St Peter's dome — the classic Roman skyline composition. Best at sunset.
