The general picture
Rome at night is safe by the standards of any major European city — the streets around major sights, Trastevere and the historic center are busy with people until 1am or later, which itself creates safety. The main cautions are the same as during the day: bag security, unlit side streets in peripheral neighbourhoods, and the usual urban awareness.
Areas to be more aware
Termini station and the immediate Esquilino area late at night see more street activity than other central areas. This doesn't mean unsafe — but it means staying alert, keeping bags secure, and using well-lit main streets rather than shortcuts.
Getting back to your hotel
Official white taxis are safe and reliable at any hour. Ride-hail apps work well in Rome. Night buses cover major routes but run infrequently — check the timetable before relying on them for a specific return journey.
