What the city looks like after dark, and how to make the most of it.

The monuments at night

The Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Castel Sant'Angelo are all illuminated after dark and worth seeing without the daytime crowds — especially Trevi Fountain, which is a different experience at midnight than at noon.

Late dining

Romans eat later than most visitors expect — restaurants fill from 8:30pm, and kitchens often stay open past 11pm. Arriving at 7pm for dinner usually means eating alone.

Evening walks

A walk from Campo de' Fiori through the historic center to the Trevi Fountain, then up to the Spanish Steps, takes under 45 minutes and covers some of Rome's best night atmosphere without entering a single venue.

Illuminated monuments worth the walk

Beyond the obvious Trevi and Colosseum, the Pantheon's exterior lighting, the Vittoriano lit up against the night sky, and Ponte Sant'Angelo's row of Bernini angel statues under lamplight are all genuinely worth a dedicated evening walk, each dramatically different in character after dark than during the day.

Safety after dark, briefly
