Safety & common scams
Rome is a safe city overall — here's what to actually watch for.
Pickpocketing
The main risk in Rome, concentrated on crowded metro lines, buses to major sights, and around the Colosseum and Termini station. Keep bags zipped and in front of you in crowds.
Common tourist scams
Unsolicited "friendship bracelets," people offering to take your photo then demanding payment, and unofficial "skip the line" sellers outside major sights are all worth politely declining.
Taxis
Only use official white taxis with a visible meter and license number, or a licensed app — avoid anyone offering a ride unprompted at the airport or station.
