Rome airport transfers — all your options compared

Fiumicino and Ciampino to central Rome — the practical train, bus, taxi and transfer choices.

Start by choosing the airport, not the cheapest headline fare

Rome is served mainly by Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA), and the best transfer depends on where you are staying, how many people are travelling and when you land. Fiumicino has a rail station inside the airport complex; Ciampino does not. If your accommodation is near Termini, a direct rail or coach connection is usually straightforward. If you are staying around Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina, a regional train from Fiumicino can avoid an unnecessary trip through Termini.

Fiumicino to Termini: Leonardo Express

The Leonardo Express is the simplest rail option between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini. It is a dedicated non-stop Trenitalia service and normally takes roughly half an hour. Buy through Trenitalia or airport-station sales channels, and check the live timetable for your date: engineering works can change late-night services. Trenitalia also supports contactless TAP&TAP on the Leonardo Express, but use one payment card or device per passenger and follow the current tap instructions.

Fiumicino regional trains: often better for the south and east of Rome

The FL1 regional route is useful when Termini is not your destination. It serves stations including Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, making it practical for many neighbourhoods and onward metro or local connections. It is not the same product as the Leonardo Express, so compare the actual station you need rather than assuming the faster-looking airport train is always the fastest door to door.

Fiumicino taxis

Use the official taxi rank outside the terminal and ignore unsolicited drivers inside arrivals. Rome's regulated airport taxi arrangements and fixed-fare zones can change, so check the current official airport or Roma Capitale tariff notice rather than relying on an old blog price. Before leaving the rank, confirm your destination falls inside the relevant fixed-fare area and ask what extras, if any, apply.

Airport coaches and private transfers

Coaches to Termini can be useful when rail times do not suit or when you want a lower-cost direct ride, but road traffic makes journey times less predictable. A pre-booked private transfer costs more but can make sense for a family, a group with several bags, a very late arrival or accommodation that is awkward by public transport. Keep the driver's meeting instructions offline in case airport mobile data is patchy.

Ciampino: bus links first, rail after a short transfer

Ciampino Airport has no railway station in the terminal. The common choices are direct airport coaches to Termini, local bus connections to rail or Metro Line A, or an official taxi. The cheapest combination is not necessarily the easiest after a late flight, so compare the number of changes as well as the fare.

Arriving late at night

Late arrivals are where a little preparation pays off. Check the final train, metro and coach times for your exact date before you fly, allow for passport control and baggage collection, and have a taxi or transfer fallback. Do not plan a connection that depends on a flight landing exactly on time.

Families, heavy luggage and reduced mobility

For travellers with children, bulky luggage or mobility requirements, fewer changes usually matter more than saving a small amount. Fiumicino's rail option is convenient, but your final station may still involve stairs, cobbles or a walk. Both airport and rail operators publish assistance information; arrange required assistance in advance rather than relying on an improvised transfer on arrival.

What we would choose

For a solo traveller or couple staying near Termini, the Leonardo Express is usually the cleanest default. For Trastevere, Ostiense or Tiburtina, compare the FL1. For three or four people with luggage, price the official taxi against multiple rail tickets before deciding. From Ciampino, a direct coach is easy for Termini; an official taxi is attractive when your hotel is well away from the coach corridor.

Book from official channels and recheck on travel day

Use Trenitalia for rail times and tickets and Aeroporti di Roma for airport transport and taxi information. Recheck shortly before travel, especially for late-night journeys, strikes or engineering works.
