Colosseum underground & arena floor
The two upgrades that change what the Colosseum visit actually is.
The arena floor
The wooden arena floor was reconstructed in 2023 after being absent for centuries — standing on it where the gladiators stood gives a completely different sense of the space than viewing from the tiers above. The floor access is included in certain ticket tiers and sells ahead of the standard ticket.
The underground
The hypogeum — the labyrinth of tunnels and chambers beneath the arena — is where animals and gladiators waited before being lifted by mechanical elevators into the arena above. It's the most atmospheric part of the whole complex. Requires a specific ticket upgrade and advance booking.
How to get both
The "full experience" ticket covers arena floor, underground and the upper tiers, and needs booking as far ahead as possible — often 3–4 weeks for popular dates. Worth every bit of the planning.
