Rome is generally safe for solo travelers of any gender — the main practical risk is pickpocketing on crowded transit, not personal safety after dark in central areas.
Where to stay
Monti and Trastevere both suit solo travelers well — walkable, social, and easy to strike up conversation at a wine bar or communal trattoria table.
Eating alone
Counter-service spots and aperitivo bars are naturally solo-friendly; for a sit-down dinner, lunch is generally a more comfortable solo meal than a late Roman dinner, which leans social.
Eating alone without awkwardness
Standing at a coffee bar counter, ordering a single portion at a pizza al taglio counter, or sitting at the bar section of a wine bar rather than a dining table are all completely normalised ways to eat well solo in Rome without the mild self-consciousness a solo restaurant table sometimes carries elsewhere.
Meeting other travellers
Hostel common areas, organised food tours, and cooking classes are the most reliable low-effort ways to meet other solo travellers if you want occasional company — Rome's hostel scene in particular has leaned into social programming (communal dinners, pub crawls) specifically for this purpose.
