Rome in March
March is Rome's shoulder season sweet spot — manageable crowds, lower prices, and the city waking up.
The weather
March is variable — temperatures of 8–15°C, with a mix of sunny days and rainy periods, particularly in the first half. By late March the afternoons are regularly warm enough for outdoor dining and al fresco coffee at a bar counter.
Why March works
Crowds are significantly lower than April through October. Hotel prices are at their shoulder-season low. The major sights are all fully open, and you'll have a quality of space at the Roman Forum and Colosseum that's simply not available in summer. The downside — some outdoor restaurants and seasonal activities haven't reopened yet.
What to pack
Layers are essential — a warm coat for mornings and evenings, something lighter for midday. A small waterproof is worth carrying. Comfortable, waterproof-soled shoes are more important in March than any other month — the rain-slicked sampietrini (cobblestones) of the historic centre can be treacherous.
Easter
When Easter falls in March (rare but possible), expect the same crowd and price surge as April. Check dates for your specific year before booking.
