The atmosphere
December is Rome at its most theatrical. Piazza Navona hosts a traditional Christmas market from early December through Epiphany (January 6th) — a cluttered, noisy, cheerful affair of sweets, toys and nativity figurines that's been running for centuries. Churches across the city set up elaborate presepi (nativity scenes) from mid-December, ranging from the simple to the architecturally extraordinary.
The crowds
The first three weeks of December are genuinely quiet — the best time of year to visit popular sites without battling crowds. The week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is busy with Italian and international tourists; book accommodation well ahead if your dates fall there.
The weather
Cool and occasionally wet — temperatures of 5–12°C, with clear cold days interspersed with rainy periods. A proper winter coat, layers and waterproof shoes. The short days mean the city's illuminated monuments and Christmas lights come on by 5pm — Rome at night in December is exceptional.
Christmas Eve and Day
Midnight mass at St Peter's Basilica on Christmas Eve is a significant event — free to attend but requires tickets booked months in advance through the Vatican. The papal blessing Urbi et Orbi from the balcony of St Peter's on Christmas Day draws large crowds to the square.
