April is peak spring in Rome — azaleas on the Spanish Steps, Easter crowds, and near-perfect weather.
The weather
April temperatures range from 10°C at night to 19–22°C in the afternoon, with increasing sunshine across the month. A light jacket for evenings, but genuinely pleasant for all-day walking. April consistently ranks as one of Rome's most photogenic months — the light is soft, the sky often blue, and the city hasn't yet turned hot and brown.
Easter
If your dates include Easter (which can fall anywhere from late March to late April), plan carefully. The papal mass at St Peter's on Easter Sunday draws enormous crowds to Vatican City and the surrounding area. Book all accommodation and tickets months in advance for Easter weekend — prices peak significantly.
Spanish Steps azaleas
The Spanish Steps are lined with flowering azaleas through April — one of the most reliably photographed seasonal displays in Rome. The display typically runs from mid-April through early May.
What's busy
April is high season — Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Galleria Borghese all require advance booking. The city fills with school trips from across Europe in the second and third weeks. Morning visits before 9am are meaningfully quieter.
