Every first Sunday of the month, Italian state museums are free — here's how to use it.
What's free
All Italian state-run museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. In Rome, this includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, Galleria Borghese, all four Museo Nazionale Romano sites (Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, Crypta Balbi, Baths of Diocletian/Aula Ottagona), Palazzo Barberini and Palazzo Corsini.
The strategy
Don't use first Sunday for the Colosseum — the queues without advance booking are brutal. Use it instead for Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (exceptional Roman sculpture, almost never crowded even on free Sundays), Palazzo Barberini (Caravaggio, Raphael, Baroque interiors), or Galleria Borghese if you book the free slot in advance online.
Booking free slots
For Galleria Borghese specifically, the timed entry system still applies on free Sundays — book your slot online in advance through the official Borghese website. Without a booking, you won't get in regardless of the free entry policy.
Why some sites are excluded
Not every paid site participates in the free first-Sunday scheme — some privately managed or specially designated sites remain outside it, so checking the current official list before planning a visit around this specific date avoids assuming free entry where it doesn't apply.
The trade-off with quality of experience
Free entry days trade cost savings for significantly larger crowds, particularly at already-popular sites — visitors prioritising a calmer, less crowded visit over saving the entry fee might reasonably choose a different day entirely, even with the free option available.
