Rome's ancient port city, remarkably intact and far less crowded than Pompeii — about 35 minutes by train from central Rome, with no separate booking needed for the train.
Tivoli
Home to both Villa d'Este, with its elaborate Renaissance fountains, and Hadrian's Villa, a sprawling imperial retreat — plan a full day if you want to see both.

A cluster of hill towns southeast of the city, known for wine and lake views — best reached by regional train or a organised half-day tour.
Picking one over doing several
Trying to combine two day trips (say, Tivoli and Ostia Antica) in a single day is rarely worth attempting given Rome's transport times — better to pick one destination per day and see it properly than rush two and see neither well.
The train-versus-tour trade-off
Independent train travel to destinations like Ostia Antica or Tivoli costs a fraction of an organised tour and isn't meaningfully harder logistically — an organised tour mainly buys narration and a fixed schedule, worth paying for if you specifically want guided context, not for the transport itself.
