Separating the good from the tourist-trap in Rome's most atmospheric neighbourhood.
The problem
Trastevere's reputation for food has made its main streets — Via della Scala, around Piazza di Santa Maria — increasingly expensive and variable in quality, with some places trading on location rather than cooking. A little navigation solves this.
Where to look instead
The streets south of Piazza in Piscinula and around Viale Trastevere attract more local clientele and fewer tourists. Via dei Genovesi and the lanes around Santa Cecilia in Trastevere have trattorias that haven't yet been discovered by the main tourist flow.
What to order
Trastevere's best places do the Roman classics well — cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara, carciofi — rather than a long menu covering everything. A short handwritten menu is always a better sign than a laminated ten-pager.
