Best neighbourhoods to base yourself
Pigneto and Ostiense offer the best combination of reasonable rent, good café culture and local character without tourist-area prices. Monti and Trastevere have more atmosphere but cost more for the same space.
Where to work
Rome's café culture doesn't automatically come with laptop-friendly seating — look specifically for places describing themselves as a "smart working café" or co-working space. Dedicated co-working spaces have opened across the city in recent years and are the most reliable option for a full working day.
Practical notes
A codice fiscale (Italian tax code) is worth getting if you're staying more than a month — free, quick at a local tax office, and required for some rental contracts, SIM cards and gym memberships.
