Free entry — with conditions
The basilica itself is free to enter; the dome climb is paid and has two options — stairs all the way (cheaper, tiring) or elevator partway then stairs to the top (faster, slightly more expensive). No booking required for either, but queues build from mid-morning.
What to see inside
Michelangelo's Pieta is immediately to the right as you enter — a sculpture of extraordinary delicacy behind glass after an attack in 1972. Bernini's baldachin over the papal altar, and his colonnaded piazza outside, frame the entire visit.
Dress code
Strictly enforced — shoulders and knees covered, for all visitors. Scarves and wraps are available to borrow at the entrance for those who arrive underprepared, but this adds to an already long entry process.
