Opening hours
Most churches close for a few hours at midday and reopen in the afternoon — check before planning a visit around lunchtime.
During mass
Sightseeing pauses during active services; visitors are welcome to attend quietly, but not to tour the space while mass is underway.
Photography
Usually allowed without flash, though some chapels — including the Sistine Chapel — prohibit photography entirely.
Photography rules
Photography policies vary by site and are usually posted at the entrance — many churches allow photos without flash outside of active services, but some smaller chapels with fragile frescoes restrict it entirely. When in doubt, look for a small sign or simply ask a staff member rather than assuming.
Donations and candles
Small donation boxes near chapels and votive candle racks are common in Roman churches — a coin dropped in is customary if you light a candle, though nobody will stop you from lighting one for free in practice. These are working places of worship first and sights second, a distinction worth keeping in mind.
